UD to get Alaska Outpost?

Here's a link to the article.

There aren't any revelations in the article, but of note: Dr. Dobler states that SJ(C?) will be giving the campus to UD should the deal go through. Does this mean that Trustees will no longer have a role? Not sure. Dobler's comments to the Chamber a few weeks ago seemed to suggest that he and Trustees were an active part of the future of the campus.

I come across like a cheerleader for the whole thing, which might be overstating things a bit! I am hopeful, like most people, that something good can come out of this partnership. I remain opposed to a scenario in which the Trustees play a role in the future of students. Time will tell...

To me it is unreal that anyone can say the buildings are in good shape. Every building on campus needs tons of work and tons of money to do the work. I truly hope UD can pull this off, but they will need deep pockets to fix the buildings up if they are going to once again run SJ as a college.

Having lived on campus I can assure everyone those buildings are not in good shape (not for lack of effort, I am sure). Living in NPH, I remember we had to stuff paper into the windows because, even when closed, the curtains would blow in the wind. I know that DSH needs a ton of work, Frasier is in disrepair, the Ras is splitting in two and the smoke stack looks ready to fall down at any minute.

UD will need hoardes of money to fix that campus. I don't see how they couldn't realize that.

Not everything that is free, is free.

As a historically Christian institution, even God knows how much work, in the form of blood, sweat and tears, many have put into SJ over the many years it has been in existence, running or not.

It seems to me, while I personally would jump at the chance, rather swim back to Sitka if necessary, to once again be part of the community that was destroyed when SJ closed, that not just a quick hand-off of debt and title will fix all that IS wrong with the way SJ IS being run.

The old guard of the Board, for all their good intentions (in their own minds) have failed repeatedly by ever thinking negatively about the university. It isn't just a business that runs on dollars and cents, but rather a community not unlike many throughout the US who have faltered due to poor financial leadership, and poor management... Can anyone say California?

With a nod to the IOU's and Good Luck's handed out not only there but at SJ, I believe that any student, former or future, can not put their trust in the board as it stands.
