Hames PE Center Sale to City Off

According to the August 19, 2009 addition of the Daily Sitka Sentinel the SJ Trustees voted to pull the Hames PE Center off the market. The trustees said they took the action because they believed the Sitka voters would not approve a ballot measure to fund the purchase. Also, the board said the sale might be premature because of all the uncertainty and possibilities.

so they basically dupped the city into paying for a building inspection/renovation appraisal only to pull out of the deal?

I’m afraid the board was correct in that the voters would not approve the purchase of Hames if it meant an increase in sales or property tax. Most people I have talked to over the last couple of months did not want to see an increase in what many people already consider a heavy tax burden. I still hope that one way or the other that Hames will be renovated and the people of Sitka will have another option for keeping healthy.

Could there be a link between the SJ(C?) decision to rescind the offer to sell Hames quickly after the UD visit, and the fact that Joseph Chlapaty, UD alum and major funder of the UD health and wellness center?
