Hames once again in the news

KCAW Raven Radio has this story regarding last night's Assembly discussion on the future of the Hames Wellness Center. Debate mostly centered around the cost-benefit ratio of such a facility. A question not asked, but one I think relevant to the issue, is where is SJ(C?) on the issue?

Should the city decide to let their lease expire, Hames closes. SJ(C?) loses the revenue. Another building gets boarded up. What's in it for the former college to let this happen?

When University of Dubuque President Jeffrey Bullock stated that any future partnership between them and the community would require community support, I chuckled. Clearly he must not have known that the problem is the reverse. Despite community support, SJ(C?) remains uncooperative, secretive, and self-important.

SJ(C?) loses nothing by allowing the city to occupy Hames at little to no cost. The gesture would go far in establishing renewed support for a campus struggling to find a future of any kind.

You hit the nail on the head Chris!"SJ(C?) remains uncooperative, secretive, and self-important."

I wonder if anyone has been looking at the "college's" IRS form 990, available here: guidestar.org?

SJ's 990 for 2008 has some very revealing data about what the board thinks and what its priorities are. For example, it shows David Dobler's salary for the 2007-2008 year (beginning 7/1/2007 and ending 6/30/2008) as $110,000. As of October 11, 2007, he had one employee to supervise and a lot of debt to wring his hands over, I suppose. To be sure, he had not received a raise from the previous year and he also, apparently, lost $35,841 in benefits and deferred compensation (if any). But, that's not as bad as poor Debbie Puckett who was paid $65,000 and had $39,000 in benefits and deferred compensation, which she lost in 2007-2008 when her salary was reduced to $64,004.

The 990s also list the five highest paid employees for 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Letting Art Cleveland go seems to have been a costly move for the "college."

If the University of Dubuque does take over in some form or other, will SJ(C?) be thoroughly vetted and will they clean house?

I don't understand why anyone would be surprised or expect anything else but to see the continued poor decisions of SJ[C] leadership ... that's the way it's been for years now!! I think the college set the stage for Wall St with its "let's reward leadership for a poor job" policy.

The interesting thing to look at for me is who's stayed on the board through this "fiasco"
