Board of Trustees meets next week

The Board of Trustees will meet on campus Tuesday, November 13th. Questions about additional layoffs, severance and annual leave, the Hatchery, property sales etc. should be on the agenda.

Those affected by Trustee decisions and the general public deserve answers. The Board needs to run an open and truthful meeting. Minutes from past meetings need to be available, and time for public comment should be allotted.

Alas, I cannot be there, and need other folks to attend. Sign up in the comments section, the more the merrier.

If everyone is being laid off, who will process W2s at the end of the year?

Oh come on, what makes you think SJ has thought that far ahead!? They don't think five hours from now, let alone two months from now!

There will be at least two outside entities presenting at the meeting Tuesday, and I expect they aren't just flying up to propose a partnership with the old college. One is a midwest foundation and the other a California organiztion affiliated with the Baptist church. I've tried to contact each, but no luck so far. I'm hoping that the tribal college group can get together with the hatchery group and the library group and figure out a way to keep the core of the campus Alaska and maybe even locally controlled, and at the still time develop programs that serve the educational and cultural needs of Sitkans and Alaskans.

The Board of Trustees isn't likely to give the local group(s) the time they need to develop a more complete proposal. But then again, perhaps that hinges on the extent to which outside or other interests are coming to them money-in-hand.

I'm in Seattle, but if someone could call me from the meeting and let me listen in on the presentations, or at least the most important parts, that would be useful.

Why weren't we all prepared for this starting several months ago? Probably because we were living our lives trying to get by like everyone else. My feeling now is that if SJC gets sold off to outside interests, it will be because of the actions of the current leadership of the college and the absence of action by a lot of Native and other leaders who could have but decided not to step up.

What a shame.

Chris: Sorry you won't be there to represent us. In a previous thread ("If I were a Trustee...), you indicated that you would be forwarding the comments to the Trustees. Did you? It seems to me that the comments made there would be of value to the Trustees as they meet tommorrow and consider the future of SJC. Be well. John Garrison
