Decision Time

Tomorrow, Tuesday November 27th, the City Assembly will be voting on the future of the Hames PE Center. The motion will likely be for a one year lease, with Community Schools serving as a third party contractor. The city will cover lease costs, Community Schools will manage the facility. Dozens, perhaps scores, or community folks and organizations such as the Coast Guard will continue to donate sweat equity and perhaps additional funds to make the arrangement work. Within the next year, the Hames PE Center Task Force will develop a long term plan for the center.

Should the city decide not to agree to a lease, then the future is far from certain for a facility that SJ abandoned, but the community rallied behind.

If you feel you have a stake in the outcome, I'd encourage you to contact the assembly at assembly@cityofsitka.com.

They wouldn't not agree to the lease, would they!?

I mean look at everyone who depends on that facility! the USCG, Troopers, everyone in the community!

I, personally, will be sending my letter of support to the assembly. I hope they make the right decision.

SAVE HAMES!

why not let the feds and the state take it over... spare me my money... you people always think it's good to waste everyone else's money..

City, State, or Federal money, it all comes from us. Pony up on the local level, state or federal level what’s the difference? If public funds pay for it one way or the other we pay for it.

Whenever I read something that says "you people" and/or uses words like "always," I immediately discount the view of the writer as biased, prejudiced or ignorant. And when you add the fact that it's anonymous, well, why bother...

You can do better than that.

Ted it's the same people that are bellied up to the table every year looking for a hand out to promote their cause... Yes they Ted, liberals. It's people like me that keep people like them in check. It's obvious that I have been on the loosing end, this I mean by us locals being run out and not being able to afford to live here. These people use comments like "invest in our future", have you seen where are children have gone? They don't live here. How about "it's a health issue"? Why am I paying for your health issues" Why? here is a good one, " keep it a desirable place to live" , Hell Ted no-one can hardly afford to live here, the people that are buying into our community are not the least bit interested in the SJ gym. Ted aren't we all a little bit biased? Come on now Ted I may not be a Doctor but you can bet I have more life skill than possibly you... Tomas I know I do and further more making a living here in Sitka and being able to live here should say a lot.

As far as the state funding goes I was actually thinking maybe the Mt Edgecombe school should try taking it over, or perhaps the trooper academy?

So I am liberal because I want to keep a gym open (the ONLY public gym in the city fyi) for the use of Sitka? Are you kidding me!?

And, Mr. Anonymous, if the feds take it over: you pay. If the state takes it over: you pay. If the city takes it over: you pay. Starting to see a pattern here?

I simply think it is best served if the community stays involved.

Lets see..I want to waste everyone's money? How? Right...right...ok by keeping a gym. Gotcha. Right.

Well, Pablo, I'll agree on one point. Very few of the people we grew up with in Sitka can afford to live there - or are lucky enough to find a job there and stay around. While I don't think paying to keep SJC open is the problem, you may be right about the notion that it's a symptom of a more serious and insidious community issue.

And as for me, I'll send my money to the hatchery folks. I don't have much, but doing nothing has rarely been an option for me. Now that's an affliction...

SOL you are a little green behind the ears but your ability to be involved is awesome at your age.. I will give you heaps of credit... I'm not into giving you a lesson on government but a brief overview... Just because you accept money from the feds doesn't;t make it theirs... They want nothing to do with it but would send money anyway... It has been the pattern here since before your time.. What's wrong with one of the local state agency taking it over as an addition to their portfolio? It would fit well with the troopers and Mt Edgecumbe's mission. But they would rather us do it for the very same reason I want them to take it over, financial responsibility.

Anyway Liberal people commonly go to the government to increase burden on the rest of us by means of taxation.. Bottom Line Kid...
