Over the past two days CTA Architects Engineers a large nation wide firm has been doing a complete assessment of the Hames PE Center. I was asked to be part of the team that did the on sight work. I have to say working with these folks, that they left few if any stones unturned. In other words the field work was top notch and very professional. There was also several other local people on the team including a local architect, surveyor, building contractor, several city employees and an earth excavator. CTA brought with them 5 highly qualified engineers that looked at the building envelope, mechanical systems, electrical systems and the pool. Bob Jones the Head Engineer from CTA said the report to the city should be done by the 15th of July. His mandate to the crew was to look at all the problems and figure out how to make improvements that will last 30 years with normal maintenance. CTA will do a complete cost analyses and this will be part of the report.
All in all CTA feels the building is in better shape than assumed and that cost may not be as high as some had feared, including myself. I know I’m anxiously waiting to see the results.
With any luck another part of the old SJC campus might survive.

I managed that building for one year and would have loved to join the study group. I hope they looked under the gym floor and under the "new roof" over the pool. What a Sitka jewel it could become if salvageable. Clyde
They did look at all the roof very well. One engineer spent a day and a half on the roof. A lot of time was also dedicated to the gym floor including a core drilling through the floor. Test excavation pits were dug outside in two places. One to see what the substrate is under the pool and one to see the layers of soil on the exterior of the building. These guys even opened up the waste water drain man hole climbed down in the sewer and examined the sizes and flow of water through the waste system. Most every electric breaker box was opened and wires sizes checked to see if they were the right size. I do not think too many stones were left unturned.
I just walked by the library and Oceanview - they are both for sale: Pacific Tower Properties and Davis Realty. I thought the library was the crown of the campus and essential to the possibility of a new school - or some such.
Oceanview - that was Pat's old place wasn't it? Many good times were spent there. Their family never hesitated to open their lawn and doors to the students, even if it was just to gather and chat.
Yes, Ocean View or Ocean Vista was the house that Pat lived in. Heaven help anyone who buys that home unless they have very deep pockets. It’s a great house on a great location, but it needs a ton of work. It is a real fixer upper. Of course it made no difference which house Pat and Family lived in they would have opened it up, because they are just plain good people!!
Do we know how Pat & family are doing & if they're adjusting to Calif. life after living in AK for so long. Unfortunately, as life goes on contact with many good people diminishes; but they're remembered in thought & prayer.
