This past Wednesday, the SJ(C?) Trustees met on campus to discuss several things. Among them the sale of Hames PE Center and additional properties to cover a growing debt of over $13 million; An upcoming visit by University of Dubuque officials and donors scheduled for August, which seems to be the latest attempt at finding a suitor; and lastly the lukewarm response thus far from the state.
The Sitka Sentinel covered the meeting and these issues in their Wednesday, June 24th edition, and then followed up on Thursday with news that the city has allocated $5000 to help cover costs associated with the Dubuque visit.

Perhaps someone can explain how it is that the University of Dubuque can afford to buy SJ - but still needs $5000 from the city coffers to cover the cost of their visit?
The City of Sitka is kicking in 5 grand to promote the sale of SJ. It is obviously in the interest of the city to find a good buyer for the SJ Campus and that is why the Assembly approved up to 5 grand to wine and dine the U of D.
Even if Dubuque does agree to partner with SJC it will not receive any more funding from the PC(USA) General Assembly Council or be able to apply for federal grants.
In my opinion, SJC should open as a Jr. College and have Dubuque operate on SJC campus with undergraduate operations. This would allow SJC to apply for funding from both the Church and the state and federal government and reapply for accreditation.
There are some challenges to operating under the SJC name:
1. SJC is no longer licensed or accredited.
2. The SJC Board of Trustees have zero credibility.
3. SJC is not looking to operate, but sell, as it is in severe debt.
4. UAS is in Sitka, making junior college / voc. ed. redundant. Could SJC do it for less? No way.
Anon, UAS - if they wanted to - may be able to use the SJ campus and create a smaller residential campus as an alternative to Juneau.
So what is the 5 grand from the city going to do? Are they cleaning up the grounds at SJ to present it to University of Dubuque? I heard that the place looks pretty bad. Are they sprucing it up?
Lion,
Yes, UAS could use the campus for a number of reasons. This would not likely be done under the SJ name, which is the premise my comments were based on. It would also likely be cost prohibitive, as facilities are in need of costly repair.
I don't see it happening.
So I've been reading articles in the Sentinel about University of Dubuque's visit....they keep calling it Dubuque University...and one more thing....why do they keep using the title of President for Dobler? Doesn't the institution cease to exist? I'm just wondering.........
